"There's no rush here": Serena Williams surprises the world by defeating Anett Kontaveit at the US Open
Amazing! The supposed retirement of 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams was forgotten after she achieved a victory against #2 Anett Kontaveit at the US Open.
What surprised the public the most was that this was the first meeting between Williams and 26-year-old Kontaveit, who has managed to win 5 titles since August 2021, and seemed to be more prepared for this duel.
However, it wasn't an easy match for the American, as the Estonian didn't make it easy for her, winning the second set and putting up a fight in the others. In the end, Williams won 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-2 after a 2-hour and 27-minute match, where the 40-year-old proved she was still the queen.
"Honestly, I feel like Serena started playing better... She was hitting a little harder, missing a little less. She played a really good third set, I thought," Kontaveit said about the final set.
The stadium was filled with a crowd of almost 24,000 people, who loudly supported Williams despite the chair umpire asking them to be quiet during the game.
"I think you can only have this experience once in a lifetime, for sure," Williams later said of the atmosphere.
This Friday, Williams will face Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round, an experience that the Croatian says she has dreamed of since she was a child.
