Sebastián Rodríguez: the new world jiu-jitsu champion who puts Costa Rica on top

Last Wednesday, the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) reported that Jonnattas Gracie Araujo Da Silva, who competed against Costa Rican Sebastian Rodriguez Williams in the final of the 2022 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) No Kimono World Championship, has been stripped of his world title due to an anti-doping rule violation during the event that took place from December 8-11 in California, USA.

With this news, the Costa Rican becomes the new world jiu-jitsu champion. Although the news still needs to be validated by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF), the USADA's guidelines are very clear.

" Jonnatas Gracie Araujo da Silva, 25, of San Diego, California, tested positive for 19-norandrosterone (19-NA), a metabolite of nandrolone and other prohibited 19-norsteroids, and exogenous testosterone and its metabolites as a result of a urine sample. He accepted a three-year disqualification period that began on January 25, 2023, the date on which he was provisionally suspended from competition," the official document stated.

In addition to the sanction imposed on the Brazilian, USADA also punished four other jiu-jitsu athletes for using illicit substances to enhance their athletic performance in the world tournament.

Last May, Sebastián received his black belt in jiu-jitsu, the highest level in the sport. Since then, the Costa Rican athlete has achieved several notable accomplishments, including a fifth-place finish at a world championship, gold or silver medals at various local tournaments in the United States, and a Pan American championship title.

What is the World No-Gi Championship? The World No-Gi Championship (also known as the World No-Gi Championship) is a jiu-jitsu tournament in which competitors do not wear the traditional kimono uniform used in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Instead, athletes compete in tight-fitting athletic wear without the grips offered by a kimono.

This style of jiu-jitsu is often considered more dynamic and faster than gi-wearing jiu-jitsu, and requires slightly different technical skills. The World No-Gi-Dot Championship is organized by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) and is one of the most important events on the global no-gi jiu-jitsu competition calendar.
