Costa Rican surfer Leilani McGonagle was nominated to join the World Athletes' Commission

The International Surfing Association (ISA) The official list of the 8 surfers nominated to join the ISA Athletes' Commission (AC), the body responsible for giving athletes a voice in sporting decisions at the executive level, was published .

The list prominently featured Olympic surfer Leilani McGonagle, who is running in this vote with extensive experience in the ISA World Championships, and has been representing Costa Rica since she was 11 years old.

It's worth noting that the Costa Rican athlete is the only Central American representative and one of only four from the entire Americas. In her introductory statement, Leilani highlighted her main objective in this great sport.

" My goal is to continue representing my country and surfing in the best way possible. I believe that part of this involves the responsibility to make our sport a more equitable, fair, and beneficial place for future generations," McGonagle stated.

These are the 8 nominated athletes for the four vacant positions on the Commission:

  • Aline Adisaka from Brazil
  • Afridun Amu from Afghanistan
  • Bijan Bahrololoumi from Iran
  • Victoria Feige from Canada
  • Ayesha Garvey from Ireland
  • Leilani McGonagle from Costa Rica
  • Leandro Osuna from Argentina
  • Natasha Van Greunen from South Africa

The four selected athletes will join Justine Dupont, Alana Nichols and Casper Steinfath in the Athletes' Commission.

Similarly, this election It will take place between September 15 and 20 during the 2022 ISA World Surfing Games.

How does an athlete become eligible for this vote? Athletes must be from the current Olympic discipline (shortboard) and have competed in the ISA World Championships in 2019, 2021, and/or 2022.
