Costa Rican karateka makes history: Wins important individual medal at Pan American Youth Games

Costa Rica had not won an individual female medal at the Pan American Junior Karate Championships for 13 years, however, in 2022 Valeria Monge made history and earned a place on the podium in the under 21 category.

The Costa Rican karateka won an individual bronze medal at the championship held from August 22 to 28 in Mexico City.

The gold medal was won by Colombian Valentina Zapata , while Mexican Yaneth Quirós took silver and the other bronze medal was won by American Kaitlyn Shimohara.

The native of the Mora canton competes in the Kata modality, and on her social networks she expressed her happiness with this new medal, as well as highlighting that dreams do not come true, they are worked for.

"I'm very happy with the result, which we've worked for a long time, and I'm tripled in motivation to keep improving," Monge said.

According to data provided by LaJornada.cr , the last Costa Rican karateka to win an individual Pan American Youth medal was Ashley Binns in 2009.
