Yokasta Valle receives title as UN "champion": first Costa Rican athlete to obtain this recognition.

The United Nations (UN) in Costa Rica announced this Friday, March 10, that boxer Yokasta Valle Álvarez has been named the organization's new "champion," a term used to describe people who represent the values of the international body in different areas.

This appointment marks the first time an athlete has been selected for this position in Costa Rica.

Yokasta Valle currently holds the world boxing titles in the minimum weight category (105 pounds) of the International Boxing Federation and the World Boxing Organization.

The UN explained that the designation was made after an exhaustive study of her public profile, her behavior, the values she represents, and is a recognition of her reputation, public life, and positive principles that characterize her.

Being a UN champion comes with enormous responsibility, and I’m ready to take it on. Many of my teammates told me that if they, as men, couldn’t become champions, then I, as a woman, certainly couldn’t. There’s nothing women can’t do. As I always tell the girls: take those hateful and discriminatory speeches as fuel to achieve your goals and show the world that our capabilities are limitless,” Yokasta said.
